After a first amputation, the mortality rate for a diabetic foot equals cancer.

That statistic stopped me in my tracks at Web Summit.

We lose so many lives to something that is often highly preventable.

The core issue seems to be a lack of time.

A proper diabetic foot consult takes about 40 minutes.

The average global medical consultation is only five minutes long.

Doctors simply do not have the bandwidth to catch the early warning signs.

A startup called LookInside is stepping in to fix this gap.

Their team built an app called AFoot.

It reduces a 40-minute screening down to less than 60 seconds.

A patient or nurse just takes a photo of the foot.

The underlying machine learning model evaluates the risk instantly.

Their clinical tests already show over 93 percent sensitivity.

CEO Hermilio Carvalho and CTO Welerson Melo have built something very special here.

They managed to blend actual medical experience with sharp computer vision.

Seeing innovations like this highlights a universal truth in HealthTech: scaling any diagnostic idea requires serious technical infrastructure.

At YOUR R&D, we help other healthtech founders build out the secure backend systems needed for massive rollouts, so it is inspiring to see independent teams like LookInside nail their execution.

I will drop the link to LookInside’s site in the comments so you can check out their work.

What other areas of routine primary care do you think are ready for visual AI triage?
