When I walked up to booth A609 at Web Summit 2024, I had no idea I was about to meet one of the most impressive young founders at the event.

Ashley Galanti, the Founder & CEO of AMG Detection, is a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Georgia. Inspired by her family’s battle with epilepsy, Ashley began working on seizure prediction technology as a high school science project. Today, that early prototype has evolved into a startup poised to change lives.

🧠 The Mission Behind AMG Detection

Epilepsy affects over 65 million people globally, and in the U.S. alone, 3.4 million people live with the condition. One-third of those affected cannot find effective medication, and 70% are not surgical candidates. AMG Detection aims to close that gap.

Their core innovation is a non-invasive wearable device capable of detecting seizures 10–45 minutes before they occur, with up to 95% accuracy — a potential game-changer for epilepsy patients and their families.

“At the end of the day, epilepsy hits home for me because it’s in my own family,” Ashley shared in an interview. “And I’ve met so many others living with this condition.”

🧪 From Prototype to PhD Research of seizure prediction technology

What began as a high school project evolved rapidly through Ashley’s academic path:

  • Undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering and Journalism at UGA
  • Internship at Canine Assistants, where trained seizure-alert dogs tested her prototype
  • CURO Research Fellow
  • Currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering with a Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship

This combination of engineering, clinical insight, and personal experience uniquely positions Ashley to tackle one of neurology’s toughest challenges.

⚙️ What Sets seizure prediction technology by AMG Detection Apart?

While current solutions — from motion detectors to wearable EEGs and even implantables (VNS/RNS) — aim to detect seizures, they still face major limitations: high false-positive rates, invasive form factors, and minimal advance warning.

That’s where AMG Detection comes in with a radically different approach.

🚨 Their device, affectionately named “Joey,” is based on biomarkers detected in skin, breath, and saliva — the same early indicators seizure-alert dogs are trained to detect. This concept was scientifically validated and transformed into a wearable, non-invasive device designed to identify seizures 10–45 minutes before onset, with up to 95% accuracy and seizure type classification.

This is a first-of-its-kind predictive device, and it’s still in prototype stage, but the potential impact is game-changing:

  • Improved quality of life for people with epilepsy and their families
  • Early intervention opportunities
  • Major reduction in injury and mortality from unexpected seizures

Unlike invasive solutions such as Vagus Nerve Stimulators (VNS) or Responsive Neurostimulators (RNS), AMG’s solution is non-invasive, affordable, and mobile — ideal for pediatric, elderly, or non-surgical patients.
